Chapter 12
"You have to break up with her, baby."
Shannon called him right after dinner. He was
upstairs, pacing back and forth in his room, unable
to get the picture of his pet snake out of his mind.
Ernie had been sliced cleanly across the middle, cut
into two almost-perfect halves.
Scotty was standing right next to the phone when
it rang. Startled, he uttered a short cry, then picked
up the receiver before the first ring had ended.
"Hello?"
"You have to break up with her, baby."
Shannon didn't even bother to say hello. Her
voice was as whispery as ever, but there was a hard,
determined tone to it, an edge Scotty had never
heard before.
"Shannon — did you kill my snake?" he asked
angrily, balling his free hand into a tight fist.
"You have to break up with her. You have to."
"Did you? Did you kill my snake? Answer me!"
"You have to break up with her, Scotty."

Scotty made the fist tighter and tighter until his
hand ached with pain. Slowly, he relaxed his hand.
His voice trembled from anger as he spoke. "Stop
repeating that and answer my question."
"You've hurt me, baby," she said, her Uttle-girl
voice returning. "Please don't make me hurt you
more."
"More? What do you mean by morey Shannon?"
he screamed. "You're admitting it? You're admitting
that you did it?"
"Come over tonight, and we'll talk about it," she whispered.
"What? Are you serious — ?"
"Come over," she repeated playfully. "There's no one here but me. I'm very lonely, baby."
"Shannon — I — I'm going to call the pohce," he
said, surprising himself. He didn't know if he was
serious or not. He hadn't really thought about it.
The words just popped out.
"The pohce?" her voice grew even tinier. Then,
to his surprise, she giggled. "My brothers wouldn't
like that."
"I don't care about your brothers," he declared.
"I've decided. I'm calling the police."
There was a pause. Then she said softly, "No,
you're not. Because then Lora would find out.
Wouldn't she? And her parents. I'd have to tell everyone then, wouldn't I? Everyone would know
about you and me, baby."
"Now, wait — " He didn't know what to say
next. Shannon was right, of course. There was no
85
way he could go to the police. If Lora found out,
she'd break up with him. He'd lose her. He'd lose
. . . everything.
Besides, he had no way of proving that Shannon
killed the snake. The police would laugh at him,
wouldn't hsten to him at all.
"Come over, baby," she urged. "Stop being so silly."
"I'm never coming over," he said slowly, speaking each word clearly and distinctly. "Hear me? I'm
never coming over. And if you call me, or threaten
me, or do something else to me — anything — I'll
call the pohce, Shannon. I really will."
He hung up the phone and realized he was trembling
all over.
A loud knock on the bedroom door made him
jump.
The door swung open, and Denny came skipping
in, a big grin on his face. "What do you want?"
Scotty snapped, not meaning to sound so harsh,
trying to calm down, not wanting Denny to see how
upset he was.
"Can I ask you a favor?" Denny asked, fiddling
with the homework papers on Scotty's desk.
"Yeah. I guess."
"It's a pretty big favor," Denny said.
